Make the classic Hot Toddy recipe with bourbon (or Irish whiskey), honey, fresh lemon, and hot water. This cozy autumn cocktail is perfect for fall nights, holiday parties, and chilly backyard gatherings.
About This Hot Toddy
We made our first Hot Toddy of the season during a windy October setup in Sayville. The grill wouldn’t light, someone forgot the ice, and the band was late—but once the kettle started steaming and the room filled with lemon-cinnamon aroma, the whole vibe shifted. Guests put phones down, hands wrapped around mugs, and the party finally settled in. That’s the magic of a great Hot Toddy: simple ingredients, big seasonal payoff.
Rooted in 18th-century Scotland, the Toddy blends honeyed sweetness, bright citrus, and the warm spice of bourbon or Irish whiskey. It’s our go-to warm autumn cocktail for weddings, backyard fire-pit nights, and cozy holiday dinners. No shaker needed—just a mug and a spoon.
Tools You’ll Need
- Heatproof mug
- Jigger (or measuring spoons)
- Bar spoon (or teaspoon)
- Kettle or source of hot water
Ingredients (1 cocktail)
- 2 oz bourbon (or Irish whiskey)
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 oz honey syrup (1:1 honey : hot water)
- 4–5 oz hot water
- 1 cinnamon stick, 1 lemon wheel (garnish)
Steps
- Warm the mug. Fill with hot water, then discard.
- Build. Add bourbon, lemon juice, and honey syrup.
- Top & stir. Add hot water and stir gently.
- Garnish. Cinnamon stick + lemon wheel.
Bartender Tips
- Honey syrup: Mix equal parts honey and hot water until smooth (refrigerate 1 week).
- Spirit swap: Irish whiskey is silkier; rye is spicier; aged rum adds molasses notes.
- Temperature: Use just-off-boil water so citrus stays bright.
Variations
- Ginger Toddy: Add 2–3 slices fresh ginger or 1/4 oz ginger syrup.
- Chamomile Toddy: Build with hot chamomile tea instead of water.
- Apple Toddy: Use hot apple cider in place of water; reduce honey to taste.
When to Serve
Great for cool-weather cocktail hours, post-ceremony warmups, and after-dinner service. For events, batch in a vacuum carafe and garnish to order.

It’s not medicine, but the warm liquid, steam, and honey can feel comforting. Always follow your doctor’s advice if you’re under the weather.
